Legumes such as beans get their nitrogen from nitrogen fixing bacteria called rhizobia which convert air nitrogen N₂ into soil nitrogen ammonium(NH₄⁺). In the symbiotic relationship, the bacteria attach to a part of the roots called the susceptible region, which expands throughout more of the roots so there is more room for the bacteria to fix nitrogen. There has been shown to be an alternating pattern where the susceptible region is not continuous and appears to be alternating with a pattern. The NSP1 gene expression increases the susceptible region and with luminescence(an imaging technique) they realized the expression of that gene was periodically(repeated at 6-hour intervals). There are other genes that expand the susceptible region and they have done studies showing they are more continuous and less periodic.
