"Iris Murdoch on Love as Just Attention" is a discussion board assignment that invites students to engage with Iris Murdoch's famous M & D example [from her 1964 essay The Idea of Perfection] and think about how it serves to illustrate her notion of love as just attention.

This assignment is best used prior to the class discussion and serves to 

1. increase individual student engagement with the reading prior to class discussion, 

2. provide a relatively low-stakes opportunity for students to express, in writing or by recording themselves [see below], their understanding of a challenging class reading, 

3. provide an opportunity for students to practice how to engage constructively with one another, in a low-stress environment [i.e., not in class],

4. enable the instructor to identify parts of the passage that students struggle with before discussing it in class,

5. enable the instructor to identify student contributions that are worth integrating in the class discussion [especially from students who otherwise don't participate as much in class].
