The notion that Black is beautiful is rooted in the civil rights protests and progress of the early 60s. I taught communication and drama in Georgia and directed many plays taken to different communities. I attended rallies and enabled white students to contact with black. I worked with the black sociologist Linonel Newsome at Morehouse College who advised the black student leaders of the protests and boycotts that resulted in integration. Support of what yet needs to be done to have a nation in which diversity is normal is experienced empathically by reliving those times. That is the overriding purpose of my play Tape In. Its title echoes the sit-ins of Atlanta and through the south.
