BEACON: A Nursing Guide to Difficult Conversations with Palliative Care Patients 

Background: Studies show that new nurses feel ill prepared to have difficult conversations with palliative care patients regarding end-of-life. While there are multiple existing models for breaking bad news to patients, there are a lack of educational resources designed to teach nurses how to develop their therapeutic conversational skills. Purpose: This article provides an in depth look at the BEACON model and how it guides nurses through the process of having difficult conversations with palliative care patients. Approach: Taking into consideration a constructivist view point and philosophical influences such as Kolcaba’s comfort theory, the BEACON model of communication was developed. Conclusions: BEACON offers those nurses with little to no experience having difficult conversations a resource to design the therapeutic conversation to be goal oriented while offering comfort with its step-by-step design.
