I have used this simulation for a few years. I let students make a hypothesis and then play around with it through several rounds of simulation. I always make it a point to show how an environment that changes to rapidly is more often to result in species extinction, since they are less likely to be able to adapt. And the simulation can also show them that a diverse population is more likely to be able to survive many generations.
