The HaulFare Car Shipping Cost Index is a free, monthly open dataset of estimated prices for shipping a car between US states and major metros. The October 2026 edition has 50 lanes (30 state to state and 20 city to city), each with an open carrier low, high and midpoint estimate, an enclosed carrier range, the open price per mile, last month's midpoint and the month over month change. All figures come from a documented price model (a per-mile rate curve adjusted for vehicle class, trailer type, season and diesel prices) and are labeled as estimates, not quotes. Instructors can use it for real-world statistics and consumer finance exercises: plotting price against distance, explaining why cost per mile falls on long routes, computing percent change, or pairing it with the companion Ship vs Drive Study to weigh the full cost of driving a car cross country.
