The Backyard Initiative is a collaborative, community-led endeavor in Minneapolis that seeks to improve community health through the action of local residents and the utilization of cultural resources. Formed in 2008 by Allina Health, the Cultural Wellness Center and other local organizations, it is a unique partnership that pairs a large, heavily-resourced institution with leaders of neighborhoods that have been historically neglected by large institutions. By focusing on the capacity of individuals to improve their own health, it has seen great progress since its founding. Citizen Health Action Teams (CHATs) have formed to improve wellness, and the coalition has added members recently. This material is part of The Hubert Project collection, the premier hub for open educational resources in the public affairs field.
