This math unit from Illuminations allows students to examine geometric sequences and exponential functions through the example of the placement of frets on stringed instruments. The unit includes two lessons, appropriate for grades 9-12. In the first lesson, students will measure the distance from the bridge to the nut and each fret on a stringed instrument. In the second lesson, the students will use that data to determine where to place frets on an instrument. Each lesson should take one class period to complete.
