Research Impact and Bibliometrics as Data Science - semester-long Canvas course
Bibliometrics has long played a critical role in identifying developments and trends in science. Expertise in bibliometrics has gained visibility in aiding academic communities to measure and understand the research landscape and researchers', research groups', or institutions' positions. A bibliometric analysis requires expert knowledge in data collection, wrangling, visualization, and interpretation, along with understanding indicators and limitations. Outcomes of bibliometric analysis influence decision- and policy-making at various levels.
This course provides an intensive introduction to the fundamentals of bibliometrics from the research impact perspective. The course aims to acquaint students with the theories, concepts, methods, and applications of bibliometrics in research impact evaluation. The materials are broad in scope and cover topics including but not limited to research impact, research profiles, scientific collaboration, research opportunity identification, university ranking systems, and altmetrics. Students will acquire hands-on skills in implementing bibliometric analysis. Students will also learn the limitations of bibliometrics.
Taught Spring 2023 at the School of Information Sciences, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as IS 597RIO [Advanced Topics in Data Analytics & Data Science] Research Impact and Bibliometrics.
Development of this course was supported by NSF 2046454 CAREER: Using network analysis to assess confidence in research synthesis.
