Increasing attention has been directed toward central nervous system (CNS) diseases, given the limited penetration of CNS drugs into the brain parenchyma due to the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Nanomaterials with BBB-crossability are being extensively developed for treating CNS diseases owing to their beneficial properties. This review outlines the physiological structure of BBB and presents various nanomaterial-based BBB-crossing strategies for delivering theranostic agents to the brain. It is anticipated that clinicians, biologists, material scientists, and chemists will find this review of interest.
