Online Assessment Strategies: A Primer

Instructors who design online courses have an opportunity to develop assessments to monitor students' progress toward achievement of learning objectives.  When combined with well-designed learning objectives, assessment techniques can close the feedback loop and provide excellent artifacts not only for course evaluation but programmatic and campus wide assessment. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the essential elements for the design and use of formative and summative online assessments including discussion postings, assignments, SCORM modules, and proctored and non-proctored tests or quizzes.
