Topic 9: Implementation of UDL

The decision to begin applying the UDL framework in your course design and learning environments will bring a paradigm shift in how you teach. This shift need not feel overwhelming, as you are likely already providing multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression to your students. Best practice for implementation is to begin with small steps and select a specific aspect of your course design, instructional material, or assessment and think about ways it could be informed or changed by the UDL framework.

Creating a more universally designed course is a marathon, not a sprint!

Topic Learner Outcomes:

  1. Explain the process of implementing UDL in the classroom as described by Loui Lord Nelson in the resource, Getting Started.
  2. Apply the steps of the process to your course.
  3. Examine what your students are struggling with regarding two of the following: an aspect of your syllabus, an instructional material, a learning activity, or an assessment.

Module Deliverables:

  • Artifact #1
  • Artifact #2

1. Produce two new or improved artifacts. Choose from these options: an assessment, instructional material, learning activity, or syllabus.

2. Use the UDL Matrix Alignment form to demonstrate checkpoints on the matrix. Each artifact includes an alignment form. UDL Matrix Alignment Form Sample.docx
