Due to the large surface area of the lungs and the lack of (significant) extracellular enzymes, the lungs are good targets for drug delivery. Because inhaling drugs is not that effective, having microbots carry the drugs and deliver them to the lungs is something that is being developed. Biohybrid microbots use parts of life such as micro-algae to deliver the drug since the flagella enables them to swim. The adaptability of the algae is an advantage along with the ability to deliver at precice locations. As the algae swim to the lungs, they keep all of there abilities and are eventually degraded after the drug delivery is complete. Using algea microbots has been shown to be much more effective than passive nanoparticles which can not swim. To make the robots, they added the drug loading section to the surface of the microbots. The green algae species they use has convenient chemical properties. There is a limit to the amount of drug they can add to the microbots before they start getting slowed down, though anything below 25 μg(micrograms) does not significantly slow them down. When doing saftey tests in mice, they found good evidence that this procedure is safe
