The Making of Race is an open educational resource on how racial categories in the United States are created, contested, and reshaped through law, science, government policy, media, and everyday life. It is organized into six modules of four units each. Every unit is written to stand on its own and pairs a reading section with two case studies, reflection questions, and suggested further readings. The resource is built for two audiences: self-directed learners who want a structured introduction to the topic, and instructors looking for adaptable materials they can assign in whole or in part. It grew out of an undergraduate sociology course at Lehman College, CUNY, and draws on recent scholarship in the sociology of race and ethnicity. Study guides and sample assignments are also included.
